Les Rhabilleurs, airing Live from Geneva.
“Ready, Steady, Go ! This week, the Team is airing Live from the SIHH watch faire in Geneva. Everyday we will share with you some of our favourite releases, pieces we truly love, pieces that take us by surprise or simply pieces you cannot afford not knowing to get an understanding of the industry of “Time and Emotions.”
Our very last SIHH related article today folks. It is time for Richard Mille to complete and end our selection which, I hope, you enjoyed as much as we did. Founded only 15 years ago, the Swiss manufacture turned watchmaking success story quickly made it to the top, largely thanks to the complexity of its pieces and its price point. The models which caught our attention at the SIHH 2016 are the RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon, born from a collaboration between Airbus and Richard Mille, and the RM 67-01 Automatic Extra-platte, an amazing timepiece hiding state of the art technology in an extra flat case. Even as strong defenders of tradition and classical codes, we have to admit that the extra thin model seduced us by its lightness, comfort and finishing.
RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split Seconds
Richard Mille always had a strong interest in the aviation world because of its need of innovation and renewal. This is why the watchmaking brand joined forces with the R&D department of ACJ, a subdivision of Airbus, in charge of designing and creating luxurious private jets.
As always, this new reference shows technical genius and innovation. The new tourbillon calibre RM50-02 holds a power reserve indicator, a couple indicator, allowing the watch owner to monitor the barrel’s spring tension, to optimize the chronograph function, and a function indicator. A new case design was created especially for this model to reflect the lines and shape of an ACJ plane window. Most of the movement’s elements are made out of grade 5 titanium.
A nice lesson of what the brand can come up with in the innovation department. Even thought this reference isn’t centered on readability, mostly because of a transparent sapphire dial, the finishing is off the charts.
RM 67-01 Automatique ExtraFlat
In their never ending quest for innovation, Richard Mille went after its iconic model : the RM 010 Automatic, and delivers and extra-flat version of it.
The RM 67-01 Automatic Extra Flat is a masterpiece of cleverness. Creating an extra flat watch containing such high technological in no small issue. The self-winding movement, made escpecially for the RM 67-01, is only 3.6 mm thick. Innovation also shines through the finishing of the watch and the materials used. Most of he movement and the case, are made out of grade 5 titanium. An extra light alloy we almost believed was white gold prior to holding the watch in our hands. Truly impressive.
The extra thin barrel-shaped case perfectly fits the wrist, making the watch extremely comfortable to wear. Its lightness also helps, obviously.
A new reference that definitely seduced us, even though it remains way out of our range. Obviously, this time-piece does not represent what we usually praise, and strive for but we have to admit that the level of pure watchmaking skills and genius put into this watch cannot go unnoticed… Bravo !
