Baselworld 2017: Ready, steady, go!

Baselworld 2017. This grand rendez-vous dedicated to the little world of watchmaking. Maybe you’ve already been there, you’ve certainly heard about it I’m sure. We are but at a couple of days from the event’s big launch where brands, distributors, press people will meet…and perhaps you as well? Here’s a brief pre-show outlook of the trends we can expect, together with revelations, favorites, and other surprising finds…

Pre-Basel watchmaking forecast

Those among us wondering about what we’ll be seeing at Basel this year, the prognostics have already begun. Like every year, all of us go with guesses influenced by gathered scraps of information and secret hopes to be impressed with something memorable.

Patek Philippe Annual Calendar 5396R

The climate of this year’s edition is rather particular. We mentioned it briefly at our return mid-january from a SIHH 2017 like none other. A watchmaking market apparently trying to concentrate on “historical” values again: decreasing case sizes, middle-end pieces at more and more reasonable prices for that mid-level manager willing to spend a bit more.

To gain back the trust of the European consumer, left and forgotten on the side of the road this past decade, the road is still long. But the evolution is towards the right direction!

Hence all forms of hope are allowed here, with OMEGA’s anniversary that may announce the return of the Railmaster. ROLEX sponsors the Oscars and capitalizes on their Hollywood heritage and their presence on the big screen for the first time. Is this the beginning of a trend that collectors have been waiting but no longer dared to hope for? Perhaps.

Obviously, they’re not alone, and Baselworld 2017 isn’t limited to the famous Hall 1.1 reigned by the big players of watchmaking, that’s to say: Patek Philippe, Rolex, Tudor, leading brands of the Swatch Group, Zenith, and Chopard to name a few.

We cannot wait to see what the big names have in store for us…and the small ones.

A partnership: Baselworld 2017 x Les Rhabilleurs

On our side, this year will be marked by a stronger partnership with the show’s organizers, a Social Hub presence as well as a live broadcast of the opening ceremony for those of us who cannot be there.

“Live” information

Besides the traditional breaking news reporting of the latest finds and sharing with you our take on it, this year we’ll be much more visible on Instagram & Facebook so that you can see our favorite pieces at the same time we discover them! Videos and other live content will give you the feel of the atmosphere of this grand rendez-vous and see what’s going on “back stage.”

Les Rhabilleurs alert and ready

Baselworld 2017 is more than 2000 exhibitors from over 45 countries, so clearly, even without sleep, we won’t be able to see everything, write about everything, and show you everything. We did, however, made a list of what not to miss that will obviously be in our selection.

Now, if you know any small brand names who will be at the show and who we haven’t heard of yet, or simply have the desire to have our opinion on a specific piece, don’t hesitate to let us know in our comments section. It’d be our pleasure and we will try our hardest to check out your suggestions and give you our take!

The Encounter

So, are you ready? Shall we take you to Basel? See you on Wednesday for the first broadcasts and we hope the first shivers from the new watchmaking discoveries of 2017.

Fingers crossed for a vintage 2017 rich with emotion…
