Fellow friends and distinguished readers, as we’re now well into the new year, it’s time we review 2016 and take a look at five quality affordable watches we believe are well worth your attention. These watches tell us that there are still watchmakers out there keen on listening to the particular needs of their clients.

Two Seiko Presage models

Not many are able to resist the undeniable “good deal” aspect of this collection. Japanese know-how is well demonstrated here, and no decision was taken lightly. The dials are well-made, often with enameling, and strong reliable movements. Allow me to present to you two pieces from the collection Presage.

The SARB065J, with its delicious Cocktail dial and its no-frills aspect is a little treat. An automatic watch with a blue seconds hand. 50-hour power reserve in a body measuring 42mm. Don’t be fooled, this diameter works very well on the wrist given the architectural design of the piece. And for 479€, we certainly can spoil ourselves.

Then there’s the SARW011 who’s a charmer as well. The distinguishing feature can be found on the handmade enamel dial where delicate blue leaf-like hour hands float over beautiful Roman numerals. An automatic caliber presenting us with a complication indicating the power reserve level and date at 6 o’clock. 999€ of Japanese spirit.

MeisterSinger Néo

A watch that still evokes unanimous esteem by its simplicity and its alluring single hand. The setting of the bezel is made of Tungsten, giving the piece a sure retro look. Another element we like is the possibility it gives your significant other to borrow it with its 36mm diameter.

Without forgetting the watch’s enchanting single hand…that we’d like to think allows us to go through the day at a better rhythm. The theory of relativity at 1195€.

Oris Diver Sixty-Five

The return of the vintage watch, a true dive watch. Our hearts were swayed by the amazing bracelet as well. The first dive watch model dates back to 1965, and we’re smitten with this reproduction. Domed sapphire glass, 60’s style typography for the numerals. A solid balance between the past and the present with a diameter at 42mm that surprisingly sits well on smaller wrists.

We really dig the metal bracelet, extremely well-done, and able to handle up to 100m of underwater adventure. It’s the bracelet that best matches the inner spirit of the watch. Price ranges from 1700€ to 2050€ depending on the bracelet. An “affordable” watch in a larger sense of the word.

Nomos Club

We will never tire of this piece. Never. A minimalist design, magnificent movement that can be seen behind the transparent case back. A perfect 36mm for its build. The hour hands are fine, and the hour markers discreet. The small seconds hand fits harmoniously with the rest of dial. A fine specimen of a watch, for him and for her.

The special feature of this watch, besides its aesthetics, is the movement it holds inside. Produced 100% in-house by Nomos with a 43-hour power reserve. 1300€ that would be well spent.

So here you have it gents. Affordable timepieces that are beautiful inside and out. Pieces that hold an extra bit of soul that could very well bring a sparkle to your eyes.
